Hello, Denali team listeners. This is Kira and oh my gosh. Today's a magic day. Like I feel I'm speaking to a celebrity. Today, we actually have an incredible guest. You guys, she has, this is why she's famous. She's on the podcast today because this is one of our listeners who has actually listened to all 700 episodes. She is part of our 700 club.
Her name is Melissa King. You guys, I am so excited. She has over 15 years, Dental Veteran loves helping her patients smile by educating them and enabling them to achieve their oral health goals. Guys. She truly is an incredible person. She's coming from California. She's happily married. She has two adult children, a fur baby named Sarge, as well as a grand puppy, Wayne.
She is just an incredible person. She loves the car scene. This is a woman that I've been so excited to meet as soon as she messaged in that she has listened to all 700 episodes. I said get her on the podcast. I want to meet this woman behind the scenes. So Melissa, welcome to the Dental Team podcast. I'm so happy you're here.
Melissa (01:02.739)
Thank you, I feel so honored to be here. Like I just love your podcast, I love all of you. I'm just, your energy, your vibe just makes me happy. Like every time I listen to you guys, I smile. Or I see you on Instagram, it just makes me smile because it's nice to have a group of people out there that's willing to give all this useful information and for free. I mean, I know that sounds silly, but it's just, it makes my day every day.
Kiera Dent (01:14.624)
No.
Kiera Dent (01:28.031)
Oh, Melissa, I appreciate that so much because the podcast is created for people like you. That's why I was like, we're doing a behind the scenes. We're bringing in a real live podcast listener because this is what makes me happy. This is what makes me smile is to meet the people, to find the people who have been listening. You probably feel like you know me way more than I know you. We've gone on several journeys, I'm sure together.
Um, but kind of, I think that brief intro kind of tell a little bit about your dental journey, who is Melissa King behind the scenes. I just want to know like some random things about you. So kind of tell us your dental journey. And then, um, you got some, I mean, car scene. Oh girl, we can talk cars all day long. So before we get there, tell us how you got into the dental scene.
Melissa (02:05.755)
Yes.
Melissa (02:09.723)
Well, I started off when I was in college as a file clerk at a dental office. And it was actually the dental office that I was going to. And then I worked my way up into like a front office supervisor position. And so I would have stayed there forever, but I ended up moving. And I took some time off and worked.
Kiera Dent (02:27.545)
Mm-hmm.
Melissa (02:30.235)
because of my kiddos, I stayed home basically, I worked for the school district, so I could take care of them. And then when the timing was right, I started back in dental. And of course things have changed since then. I mean, we were still using regular x-rays where we had to develop them. And now everything is digital, paperless, and I have grown a lot and learned a lot too.
And so then I was like front office, a hygiene scheduler, treatment coordinator, I did AR, which I love AR, because it's like to me, it's a puzzle and it's helping our patients. Because you know, money is a priority for patients and that's how you win their trust is making sure that you honor what you say to them. And so I love that. And then I was promoted to an office manager and that's what I've been doing, oh, for quite some time now. And I just love it because I love growing my team.
Kiera Dent (02:59.798)
Hahaha
Melissa (03:22.733)
I love my team so much. I hate saying this because I'm the oldest one, but I treat them obviously with respect, but they're like my kids. And so when they say they want to learn something and do something, I'm able to help them achieve their goals because I had people who did that for me. And so that's what I love about it.
Kiera Dent (03:27.502)
I'm sorry.
Kiera Dent (03:39.63)
That's amazing. That's amazing, Melissa. And talk about like, as I was listening to your bio, I feel like that's very similar. You and I, I mean, I feel like I'm listening to my reflection and to hear someone go through a similar journey is just beautiful. And I think as we become, let's just say more seasoned in dentistry, that there really becomes this joy of passing that knowledge and seeing other people grow and evolve and become so
Melissa (03:58.235)
Mm-hmm. Yes.
Kiera Dent (04:06.326)
That's amazing. So I definitely, I have like a ton of questions. Like, like I said, I feel like I'm meeting a celebrity 700 episodes. We've gone around like the sun together. So tell me how, how do you even listen to the podcast? Like I'm always intrigued by people. Like is this on your like daily drive? Is it while you walk your dog? Like tell me kind of how, like how do you podcast is what I feel. And I, maybe that's what we should put as a real guys. So, um, Alex, Eve, all of you listening, how do you podcast? Like I'm so curious how people podcast.
Melissa (04:35.027)
So I have a short commute now to work. So I really don't have time to podcast, so to speak. But I do it while I walk the dog or when I'm getting ready in the morning and I just need some, you know, like feel good because I can listen to my music, that's great. But what is it going to get me? I want to have something that's going to give me like driven for the day. I wanna be pumped up. And that's what I love about you guys is I'm like, I'm pumped up. Like my favorite episode, 719, all the way, the sprinkles one.
Kiera Dent (04:41.392)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (04:57.966)
Yeah.
Kiera Dent (05:04.853)
I'm sorry.
Melissa (05:04.981)
Like I have listened that multiple times. I didn't know you could actually like save it like a bookmark. I didn't know that. So, but those are, that's how I do it because it gets me like thinking about like on my way to work. Like I'm thinking, I'm like, well, you know what I could do. That's a great tip or like.
Kiera Dent (05:09.654)
Mm-hmm. Yep.
Melissa (05:21.275)
could use that or one of my colleagues or my fellow peers that need help. I'm like, you know what? I just listened to this episode. I can send it to someone. So it's just finding the time. Just do it. I mean, that's, we have 20 minutes. Your podcasts are very time friendly. So you have 20 minutes while you're making dinner. Put it on. Yeah.
Kiera Dent (05:37.722)
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, gosh, that's helpful to know because I think it's interesting being the podcaster. I don't listen to as many podcasts and people think I'm crazy for that. And I'm like, no, I need a little bit of a shut off time. I listen to a lot of audible, audible books. There we go. But podcasting and I've often wondered, but I love that you said that of like, why not? Why not inspire my day? And it's crazy because I do actually have a ritual every time before I go into an office or before I speak. I literally turn on my favorite episode.
I listen to it, it pumps me up, it amps me up, and it just gets me ready. And honestly, that's been my mission of the podcast has been to inspire people like yourself to give them that positive energy. I feel like there's so much like negativity that can go on. Like, no, we are working in the best industry. Let's have a good time. Let's go have a great day. We're leaving our families. Why not be armed with success rather than being armed with like, oh, the dread.
And there's so many ways to do it. So Melissa, I'm super curious. Like this is just me. I mean, I'm gonna ask you a million questions and then I'll pivot it over to you. You can ask me anything. Like this is podcast uncensored, unfiltered. Any question you've ever wanted to know, you can ask today. But I'm curious, what have been some of the tips that you've been able to take from the podcast and implement into your practice? And like, I know I didn't prep you for this. So this is great. Cause then it's gonna be real life, the things that are really stuck for you and your practice and have made a difference for you guys.
Melissa (07:00.623)
Well, your podcast helps me like refresh things. Some of these things I've heard throughout my years, but we forget as much as I would like to say that I can remember everything, I can't. But the one that really stuck out recently is I was preparing for my 2024 reviews. Like I like to have my calendar set up, I'm that person. I have to have my plan in place. But the 30, 60, 90, and so like I was like, you know what? I dropped the ball. I recently hired somebody. So it was the one where you talk about like doing the,
Kiera Dent (07:09.654)
right?
Kiera Dent (07:20.631)
I like you.
Melissa (07:30.597)
at 30 60 90s. I know that. But I was like, you know, it made me think about that. So I went back and listen to that podcast, because like, I feel that you you've been there and your team has been there. And then like the guests you have on there, they've all been there. And it's a great network. And so that one has definitely helped me and then my office is actually we are building a new one. And we're going from seven ops to 15. So the other one is that one that you talk about increasing your op size like
Kiera Dent (07:44.738)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (07:52.334)
Have fun.
Kiera Dent (07:56.002)
Perfect.
Melissa (08:00.457)
And I was like, oh, this is a good one, because then I was able to think about like what questions I had or what we needed to do, you know, and help my doctor during that process. So I could be a support to him. I mean, there's so many little nuggets that I take away from all of them. And I just, that's what I, and you can go back and look at them too, so.
Kiera Dent (08:11.254)
That's amazing.
Kiera Dent (08:19.458)
Mm-hmm. And that's something where as you said that it brought up the quote for me I'm gonna botch this name guys So like all of you should laugh at me like take me back to my public speaking class days where I Didn't ever want to do public speaking because I introduced this guy who speaks He spoke Vietnamese and I said he spoke Vietnamese and the whole class laughed at me. And so here we go I'm gonna tell you a quote and like this person's name like whatever is Vietnamese Vietnamese. I think it's her colitis
laugh at me again guys, but it says no man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man. And so as you were saying that, that's honestly what I feel like dentistry is we've learned this and something he was funny, I was actually in an office that I consult, and we're looking at the agenda and I was like, wow, that's a really good quote. And like, here, you said it. I was like, yeah, that is a good quote. But I said, like, sometimes learning is just remembering.
Melissa (09:06.782)
Hehehehe
Kiera Dent (09:10.786)
And so for you to hear that, like that's the goal. Some of you might be new to the podcast and welcome. You've never done these positions, but for me as an office manager, there was just so much that I felt like I just needed those quick check-in reminders to refine like, oh yeah, we should be doing that. Oh yeah. Let me add that in. Oh yeah. I could change that up. So it makes me happy to hear that. And for all of you listening, if you haven't listened to all 700, like Melissa has, you haven't gone on that journey on the dental team website, you guys can go to the podcast.
and you can search topics. So if you want something on case acceptance or hiring or 30, 60, 90, or onboarding or associates, any of those keywords will pull all the podcasts we've made of all 700. Cause some of you coming in that are new, welcome. I would feel very daunting to look back at 700 episodes and say, oh my gosh, like that's a lot, but not to miss the goal that's in there. Just go quickly search it and you can find it. So, okay, Melissa, I've asked you so many questions and I'm truly just honored. Like, I just want to say thank you for making the podcast.
Um, something that has value that has meaning to someone in their life and, um, to, to spend your time, I believe time is the most valuable, precious commodity we can ever gift. And so for you to gift your time is beyond humbling for me and something I'm so thankful for. So thank you. So I want to pivot it to you. Welcome to Denali team, uncensored with Kira, any burning questions you wanted to know, ask, and you can just, and not that's fine. I just wanted to allow you an opportunity listening to me for so long. Here it is. Any questions you have?
Melissa (10:38.651)
Well, one that I wonder about is like, cause you talk about you're so vulnerable when you talk about yourself and like where, how you started, but how did you handle being scared? Like taking that leap. I know that we're supposed to fell forward, but I think that's one thing that as like anybody from where they're dental assistant to doctors, like always go into that next level. It's so scary to make that jump. How would, how did you do it? Like what made you motivated?
Kiera Dent (11:07.254)
Gosh, this is a good question. It's not one that I've ever said. I think one of it is just like, I have a nature, like by default, I enjoy growing to the next level. So I think there's something like innate within me. I grew up with an older brother who was four years older than me, and he's just like naturally gifted to be brilliant. And that was not my natural gift. I really had to work hard.
But I was so determined, even though he was four years older than me, to be just as good as him, to be just as smart as him. I was a freshman in high school. He was a senior in high school. My brother is valid Victorian. And literally because of that, I set the goal to be valid Victorian. Like, and I'm not a book smart. I remember one day I even asked him, I'm like, Evan, I need some help on this. He's like, hold on, let me go take a nap and I'll be able to figure it out. He woke up and like the answer was for him. And I was like, I've spent hours. So I think by default, I have a more competitive nature.
But realistically, I think it comes down to just like, you don't wake up motivated. You don't wake up without that fear. I think realizing that fear is normal. Like I, I'm terrified. I have a decision to make literally right after this podcast. I'm scared out of my mind, but just because I'm scared doesn't mean don't do it. And so I think I look, my little sister told me, she's like, it's 10 seconds of courage for a lifetime of habit. Like usually it's just that 10 seconds of courage that we need and realizing it's only 10 seconds. Like that's pretty short.
to move forward. But then I really do think it's a muscle too. So things that you can do to train yourself, like I did not wanna run a marathon. And I was like, okay, that's like one thing I don't wanna do, so I'm going to go do it. I didn't want to, I was super shy about numbers. And so I'm like, I'm gonna go put myself in that environment to force myself in a conference, pay a lot of money so I would force myself to do it. So I think it's more.
Maybe it's like inflicting pain, I don't know. But it's just like, just realizing that that's normal. But then I think conditioning your, I guess your fear monitor, like we're all gonna have it. That's natural. And like, I appreciate that fear in my life because it's blessed me, but I'm not gonna let that fear hold me back from where I wanna go. So I think knowing where I wanna go long-term, and then also really conditioning against it is, like I'm scared I'm gonna go to a conference next week. Like literally talking about my hands are sweating and they want us to walk on hot coals.
Melissa (13:01.79)
I'm sorry.
Kiera Dent (13:28.218)
why am I going to this? Because I know it's going to break another fear piece in me. And like, I'm scared I'm probably throw up. Like, I'm terrified to go do it. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to go forward and do it. And I think when you, I guess like another piece, if I go back, I had a coach really instill in me of integrity. And if I say I'm going to do this for myself, like other people, it's great. But internally, if I say I'm going to work out three times this week, like I show up for myself and I don't break that. So
There can be fear there, but if I've committed to myself, I know there's no breaking that commitment. And so I don't know if any of those pieces resonate, but that's how I get through, but like just know it's there. Like I'm terrified. I'm like, whew, Melissa, can this podcast last a little longer? Cause I'm terrified of what I gotta go do after. Like it's gonna be great, but I'm gonna be scared of it. I think it's just realizing like, fear holds us back from what we ultimately wanna have. Fear's a part of it, just like salt and pepper are part of a recipe, but I get to determine
Is that the main piece of the recipe or is that a sprinkling to motivate me to move forward and train myself that no matter what, if I say I'm doing this, I execute and move forward.
Melissa (14:35.687)
Wonderful. I like the whole 10 seconds of fear. It's so true though, cause it goes away.
Kiera Dent (14:40.554)
It does. There was another person, a client told me, he said, I do three, two, one, go. And you train yourself that when you say three, two, one, go, I'm not perfect at this. Sometimes I lay in bed and I'm like, three, two. Like I definitely draw that out. So I need to work on that, but this worked really well for a client. It was three, two, one, go. And then you just execute through it. But just realize like it's totally normal. But I'm committed to not being normal.
I want to be, I don't want to live a normal life. I want to live an extraordinary life. And I can't get there without having that like salt and pepper of fear in my life to get to the extraordinary levels.
Cool, any other questions, Melissa?
Melissa (15:26.155)
That was really my only one because again, I admire you and where like how you started and even your team members, how you brought them. I just it's a really great back history backstory basically because you know, I listened to all 700 so I know I act like I'm part of your circle, but
Kiera Dent (15:42.203)
You are, you are. Even though I don't know everyone's names, I just want to put this out there. It's interesting because I'm podcasting with someone who's been on the other side listening and it's really beautiful right now, Melissa, because when I record these, I'm thinking of you. I can't see you and I don't physically know what you look like, but this podcast is built for you.
that person like you are in my inner circle when you listen to all these you are in my inner circle you're in that group with me that's why I call the dental team podcast family not everyone gets to be family but those who like come along the journey with me and that means we're birds of the same feather we flock together we jive together we think the same things we want to grow otherwise my podcast isn't for you like you won't listen but those who want to be here just so you know you are in the inner circle and this podcast really is made specifically for you.
Melissa (16:31.423)
I love it.
Kiera Dent (16:32.686)
I'm beautiful. Well, Melissa, I always want to learn because I believe that the podcast is here to teach and to elevate. And I'm sure you, with all your experience, really have done some amazing things. So I'm curious, like what's one or two tips that you feel our practice does really, really well. I know you sent some to me. I don't want to pick them. I really want you to just shine because again, the way I learned most of these tips are from offices like you from coaching offices, from doing it ourselves. So I want you to, I'm going to put you on the spotlight today, Melissa King.
What are some of the things that your practice does really well? And this is a brag sesh and ladies and gents, if you can't brag about your office, you're doing it wrong. Cause there are some things you do really, really well. So brag session up for me. What are some things you guys do well?
Melissa (17:11.547)
Well, in the past two years, we've had a 33% growth production and collections. So that's huge. Um, our. Oh.
Kiera Dent (17:15.318)
Nice.
The fact that you know your numbers is what I'm most impressed by. Dang girl, good job.
Melissa (17:22.415)
Yes, well I feel that numbers tell a story and I think it's really important to educate your team on why numbers are important because numbers, again, tell a story, but it's about our patient care because it's not always about the numbers, it's about taking care of our patients and then the numbers will come. And I think that's where I take pride with my team, we're all about our patients. We put our patients first because without them, we wouldn't be here.
Kiera Dent (17:48.688)
Mm-hmm.
Melissa (17:48.819)
And that's one thing that I think has really helped. And we've increased our new patients. Like things are going really well. That's why we're able to expand. And we're literally doubling our size. And so it's very exciting. Our doctor even took us to Cancun in September to celebrate. So that was huge. I know we were, yes. But it's just having that open communication. So we have monthly team meetings. We have monthly department meetings and setting goals and the reason behind it.
Kiera Dent (17:58.71)
amazing.
Kiera Dent (18:04.183)
Wow.
Kiera Dent (18:17.915)
Mm-hmm.
Melissa (18:18.075)
and just being there for your team. That's like my number one. I'm very team focused. They call me mama Mel at work. It is what it is. I mean, I am old enough to be some of their mothers. I am, but.
Kiera Dent (18:25.956)
That's adorable.
Melissa (18:29.999)
just making sure your team feels supported because they're there, we're all there for the same reason. Obviously we love dentistry, we love patients, and it's just having that focus and the togetherness. And also realizing I am not perfect. And I love when I haven't done something in a while and like my newest business assistant, well, I do it this way and I'm like, oh my, that's brilliant. Like just having those aha moments and celebrating and our office is in a really,
good flow right now. 2024 is going to be another tremendous year. We have some good goals planned out.
Kiera Dent (19:09.622)
That's awesome. A few things that I took from there were, one, I love that you know your numbers and I love that you say that numbers tell a story of our patient care, because that's how I feel. Like the numbers are great and it's super fun, but we don't get good numbers if we're not serving and adding more value. So really seeing those numbers and for someone who's not me, telling you guys the same thing feels really beautiful. And then I also love that you guys are on growth mode, that you are and that-
like kudos to your doctor, please have them listen to this. And like, I'm giving them a huge hug for loving on this team and recognizing them. And we don't get to grow without serving. And I want you guys to remember that like offices get to grow. And I say get to, because I believe that it truly is an honor for us to grow and to serve more people. It's not something that just happens. Like if we're doing a good service and we are giving more value to people, we get that opportunity to grow. And to see it as an opportunity and a blessing rather than a curse, I think is also a great way to do it.
But then when you said like, it's all about team, I can tell you love your team and you guys have the structure. Teams also don't grow without structure. So the team meetings, like these nitty gritty pieces that we talk about all the time, you're doing it. You're doing the work. You're putting it there. Um, but for you to just love that team and love your patients. I found that really successful practices have a theme most of the time, not always. I'm can get by with fake love. Um, but usually there's a dripping of love. There's so much love for the team. And that doesn't mean that you get.
Like they get away with everything. I gets love with accountability is love with responsibilities, love with expectations and same thing with your patients, but that love, um, someone just posted this the other day on Instagram and I thought it was so cute. And so this will get dated when Instagram changes it. So right now at this present moment, they do it. But if you double tap on the heart and then you like, just keep tapping the photo, the heart gets bigger and bigger and bigger. And I feel like that's what love does. Like the more you love your patients, the more you love your team, the more you love dentistry.
Melissa (20:38.364)
guess.
Kiera Dent (21:04.45)
the bigger your heart becomes, the bigger your practice becomes, the bigger your reach becomes because that's what they feel. And so for you, Mamma Mel, I think that's adorable. That love I can just feel from you and I know your team feels it and it's genuine. So what's been like one of the hardest things you've overcome as an office manager?
Melissa (21:13.798)
Yeah. Ha ha ha.
Melissa (21:24.399)
Well, having those tough conversations. Obviously, accountability, you have to have an office with accountability. I can't, in order to have the structure. And I think...
in my when I was a younger manager, it was hard because I didn't build the trust. And so I would go in and be like, Listen, you need to A, B and C or else I mean, of course, I said it differently. But that's how it probably came across. And that was one of one of my regrets as a baby manager. But you know, we all learn and grow. And so that was one thing that it's having those conversations, but realizing we're all human and we have to talk to people how they want to be talked to like, everyone has a different personality.
Kiera Dent (21:40.929)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (21:50.548)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (21:56.289)
Mm-hmm.
Melissa (22:08.389)
And so it's just making sure that with our communication, like for me, it's like, okay, listen, we've talked about this, just going it through the motions, like it's not working. So what can I do to help you? Because this is, you know, basically letting them know it's serious, but what can I do to help you get to where you need to be? And so then if I...
Kiera Dent (22:24.288)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (22:27.423)
Yeah.
Melissa (22:29.571)
So I do like weekly check-ins. So then if I don't check-in, I feel that I didn't hold accountable for one. And so that's where it's like, I have to make sure that my follow-through is just like their follow-through. If that makes sense.
Kiera Dent (22:36.427)
Mm-hmm.
Kiera Dent (22:44.35)
Mm-hmm. It does make sense because I think that that's, managers don't realize that their team reflects them. So I'm like, if you want them to stay accountable, you've got to be the mirror that reflects that first. And just because you have good behavior doesn't mean your team's going to be perfect and follow through exactly. You got to work to earn that and to create that culture. So I love that you said a baby manager. And something I just recently learned that's really given me some space and grace is to just have compassion for that person who we were. Like, I agree. Take me back to being a manager.
Melissa (22:52.367)
Mm-hmm. Definitely.
Kiera Dent (23:13.266)
I have compassion for that girl and like so much appreciation for what she went through and the lessons she learned to polish, morph and refine to who you are today, because I believe that really awesome managers, some are born like straight out the shoot. Like there's just some people who are naturally gifted and born amazing leaders, but it's like 95% of the great office managers of the world and the great leaders of the world. It's been a refinement and a polishing where you made those mistakes. You didn't have those honest conversations and then you learn from it. And now here you are today for that. And so.
Kudos to you. I think, I'm so glad you said that was the hardest thing because I agree. I don't think it's the meetings. I don't think it's the numbers. I don't think it's the KPIs. I feel those are all like tactical skills that you can really learn. It's the people management to inspire change, to hold accountable for change, to have those conversations. This is serious, but still maintain a healthy morale, which I can tell without even knowing you, if I were to walk into your practice.
Uh, which is sometimes fun, like surprise and delight. So those of you listening, if you're not Melissa on the podcast, send me your address, send me where you're listening in from, because I traveled the nation a lot. And I have definitely done some surprise and delights to show up. So Melissa, that might be a fun. You're in California. What part of California? I didn't scope you on that.
Melissa (24:24.283)
Well, actually, my office is in Oklahoma. I'm from California.
Kiera Dent (24:27.23)
Oh, well, this good thing, because I'm like, well, when I go to Disney, if she's around a case, so Oklahoma, when I had that way to, I mean, I do have an office in Oklahoma. What part of Oklahoma? Jinx. What's, what's your closest airport by Tulsa? Okay. No wonder she's so nice guys. Midwest. Here we come. Like, but coming from California roots to California, I agree. Um, but just really beautiful that way. So Melissa, thank you for being on the podcast. Thanks for being a listener. Thanks for just taking time.
Melissa (24:35.569)
Yes.
Jinx by Tulsa. Tulsa, yeah.
Melissa (24:45.231)

Kiera Dent (24:55.918)
