0:00:05.8 Kiera Dent: Hey, everyone! Welcome to The Dental A Team podcast. I'm your host, Kiera Dent, and I have this crazy idea that maybe I could combine a doctor and a team member's perspective, because let's face it, dentistry can be a challenging profession with those two perspectives. I've been a dental assistant, treatment coordinator, scheduler, filler, office manager, regional manager, practice owner, and I have a team of traveling consultants, where we have traveled to over 165 different offices coaching teams. Yep, we don't just understand you, we are you. Our mission is to positively impact the world of dental, and I believe that this podcast is the greatest way I can help elevate teams, grow VIP experiences, reduce stress, and create A teams. Welcome to The Dental A Team podcast.

[music]

0:00:50.0 KD: Hello, Dental A Team listeners. This is Kiera, and you guys. [chuckle] Are you guys ready? I love this podcast. I think this is the third time I've done this specific type of podcast, and it's time to rally, guys. We are falling into Sucktember. Hopefully, it does not suck for you. [chuckle] Hopefully, it's an okay one for you. But I also know that this is the time where I wanna ramp up and get really strong for the rest of the year, so I figured what better way to help you guys with that personally than to do a book club, a book club lookup. You guys are welcome to join me on the book club. I am going to share some of the books that I have been reading, some of the things they are about, so if you guys wanna snag them, if you wanna have some for your offices, you guys let me know. This is something I'm really pro on one, as leaders, as teams, we need to be personally investing in ourselves. That's right, you heard me. Personally investing in ourselves. And I think one of the greatest ways to do that is to actually read something that inspires your mind every single day. [chuckle] Yes, you heard me right.

0:01:52.3 KD: I typically, when I travel, I listen to Audible a lot. I did not use to do it, I used to fall asleep doing it, so my go-to is I actually listen to Audible. I've gotten it up to three times the speed, but my go-to is 2.5 because it's really hard to understand, and it forces me to listen and pay attention. You better believe I can not be washing dishes when I'm listening to it that fast, but that's a way that I do listen to books. Other people sometimes before they go to bed, other people while they're making dinner, other people on their commutes. So shake it up. I am a really, really, really firm believer of doing something to inspire your mind, to grow you into a better version of you. So I have quite a few. My Audible is always very full. [chuckle] It's been a while since I've talked to you guys about this. You guys can go back and check, you can also go to thedentalateam.com, click on our podcast tab and you can type in book club, it'll bring up the other podcasts that I've done, discussed books that I've read, so if you guys are looking for any good reads, this is a great podcast for you.

0:02:49.9 KD: So with that said, alright, The Road Less Stupid by Keith Cunningham. This has been a fantastic book for me because he has a lot of questions to ask yourself when it comes to business, and I call it my thinking time, so I use a lot of his... They're very short chapters, you can read them, they're quick, short, they just talk about how to be less stupid in your business on a myriad of topics. It's a really, really, really fantastic book. I really, really love that. Another book by John C. Maxwell is Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn. It's a great perspective of changing your mindset instead of sometimes you win, sometimes you lose to sometimes you learn and how can we take the experiences that we have in our life right now and we actually learn from them, so another solid read. I'm really loving that book as well. The Five Dysfunctions of Team Members by Patrick Lencioni. If you're struggling with culture in your team, guys read The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. I was recommended this by Reese Harper, he is the owner of Dentist Money. I guess it's Dentist Advisors, and their podcast is the Dentist Money Show, I believe, I always mix them all together, but Reese Harper recommended this to me and I really loved this book so much.

0:04:00.9 KD: I've gone back, it's a very short, let me look. It's gonna probably talk to you guys, it's an hour and a half on Audible, granted it has two times the speed, so it's probably more like three hours. Let's see, yes. It's probably closer to three hours, if you put it at, right now I'm at 2.2 times the speed, it's an hour and a half. It's a very, very, very short book. It does not take a lot of time. It's a book that will change your practice, it'll change your culture and as leaders, it will help you see what causes team members not to speak openly, what causes team members to not be bought in and not be accountable. And if you can figure that out and get to a spot where you have true trust, not that you don't think they'll steal from you, but genuine trust that you can say things in front of one another, this book will literally change your practice. People are asking me all the time, "Kiera, Kiera, how can I fix my culture? How can I fix my team?" That book, reading it together as a team will absolutely 100% help you all out.

0:04:54.6 KD: Another book that I really loved, she's going to be on our podcast soon, is Why Your Marketing is Killing Your Business by Minal Sampat. She's awesome. She's gonna be on our podcast, I'm podcasting with her this week. Her book, I consumed it on one plane ride. I took a ton of notes and really just realised there are a lot of easy things I can be doing on marketing that don't cost me a lot of money, don't cost a lot of time. So if you guys are looking for new patients to expand your practice, to change up your marketing, that book, Why Your Marketing is Killing Your Business, phenomenal, phenomenal book. Alright, another one. I'll tell you the ones that I'm reading or have read, and then I'll tell you the ones that are coming up next. Another book that I just finished that I really loved is called The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. I wanna get this man on our podcast, his book was incredible. It talks about how oftentimes we think that success... Like happiness revolves around success, and it's actually the reverse, that when you are happier, success follows you naturally.

[music]

0:05:56.8 KD: Hey, Dental A Team listeners. We decided to get a little unconventional and come to all of you guys, because guess what? The Dental A Team is hiring the best of the best for traveling consultants. So if you know of somebody that you work with, that you've worked with in the past that you think would make an incredible Dental A Team consultant, please email us, [email protected]. We do not hire people working at offices that we work with, so we're just putting that out there. But we do want you guys, if any of you know of anybody who you think would be an incredible consultant that would love to positively impact the world of dentistry, that they've worked in the front office as an office manager, a treatment coordinator, a scheduler, a filler, and they have back-office experience, send them our way, [email protected]. And guys like you, we're looking to hire our unicorn, and thank you all for helping us out. Here's and cheers to hiring all of our unicorns and making this year our year to build our most incredible teams.

[music]

0:06:56.4 KD: Because I think I was struggling in life when I was reading that book, it really just changed my perspective, helped me realise that I really wanted to be happier in my life. I wanted to be better in my life. I wanted to... And it just helped me realise, like, "Wait a second. In order for me to be more successful I need to find happiness in my daily life. There were so many tangibles. Such a fantastic book.

0:07:17.5 KD: Alright. I have not started reading this one yet, but I'm going to. It's called Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street. I was recommended this at a conference I went to. And this one actually, is for those of you struggling with hiring. I can't give you more than that. It just talks about who you need to hire. I've been recommended it like three times. Definitely need to read that. But if you guys are struggling with hiring, check it out, let me know how it is for you. Next book. Guys, I'm like rolling through these books. I should probably do a deeper dive for you. But, hey. Why not.

0:07:48.2 KD: The next book is Comparisonitis by Melissa... Oh Gosh. I'm gonna butcher it. Ambrosini. She has another great book called Open Wide. This is completely different from business. Comparisonitis, I actually love it. I love the book. I compare myself a lot with other people. I think there's a lot of women out there and men out there that tend to do that. And when we start to compare our lives with other people, sadness can creep in. A lot of times I don't wanna look on social media because I don't wanna feel that my posts aren't getting as many likes, or maybe this person looks better than I do. Because I literally struggle with it. And I realised it makes me sad. [chuckle] It makes me really sad in my life. And so I started reading it. And what I love about Melissa's take on Open Wide, Open Wide is for relationships and having a stronger relationship. Get ready, it's a little bit dicey. So read it with, whatever. Maybe don't have it on Audible with your kids. It's not that dicey. It just is a book that really helps you have a more open with your relationships with people.

0:08:42.9 KD: Her Comparisonitis, it's just a very tangible down-to-earth book that helps you just dive through it. So two fantastic books by her. I really love them. Again, that is something that is more for her personal journey, not necessarily a business journey. But I will say on the Comparisonitis, she has specific things. It's like being addicted to comparing yourself and how to break that trend. So another fantastic book. Another one, I'm in the middle of his 10% Happier. I've got a happiness theme. Shout out to the client who recommended this one to me. A really fantastic book that gives tangibles of how to be happier. He talks a lot about his personal journey at the beginning and then dives into tangibles on how to be happier, just that 10% boost and how that can really change your whole life. He talks about how he went through an identity shift, and identity crisis, where he lost his identity. He realised that everything was built around that, and how he was able to rebuild. So another really, really fantastic book.

0:09:39.3 KD: Now, are you guys ready? These are books on my... Wait, there's one more. It's not on my Audible, because I have a really cool gift from my business coach. So if you guys are looking for great gifts for end of year for some of your people, it's called Just The Right Book. And I talked about this, I think on an Instagram post, but I'll share it on the podcast so you guys have it. Just The Right Book is a freaking rad gift. It's the coolest gift I think I've ever been given. And for an entire year, this company sends me a book every so often. I have yet to figure out how often they send it to me. I haven't figured it out. I'll be honest, they sent me like four books. I started three of the four and one of them I consumed. And it was the The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. It's by Stuart Turton. We'll see if that's right. Oh guys, I loved it. It was a murder mystery. And oh, my Gosh. There are so many characters and so many pieces. And that was a book that I consumed. I did not do any of my notes. I didn't do anything crazy like that the whole time I was traveling [chuckle] for an entire week. I literally lived in this book. It was such a fun book.

0:10:47.9 KD: So if you guys like murder mystery. I read the reviews. People absolutely love the book or they dislike the book. So if you guys need a good fiction read, it was captivating from page one. And I don't like fiction books, they take a long time to get into. So if you guys just need to get out of business mode, get into the fiction world. Again, The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. I'm so excited. I have another book. The Devil and the Dark Water which he also wrote. Have yet to read that one. But again, I'm gonna give you guys a spin on... Guys, sometimes I get obsessed with business so much that I need a break. And so I will purposely read fiction books to pull my mind out of business mode, and that's actually where some of my best ideas come from. Because I use the creative side of my brain versus my analytical side of my brain, and that's actually why I do a lot of fiction books. So yes, I'm all about self-improvement and growing and business and development, but yet I think sometimes there's a place for fiction.

0:11:38.9 KD: So those are two great books. If you guys don't like them, email me. I don't mind. I like good feedback. And feedback of like, "Kiera, I actually didn't like that book." Cool. It will help me have better recommendations. I like these books. This is my personal take on it. I'm trying to give you guys a nice array. I don't know if I mentioned this book. This was a great book. I'm halfway through it, almost done. It's called The Power of Nice by Linda Kaplan and Robin Koval. It talks about how you can be nice and win in business. How you can be nice and win in society. How you can be nice and win in teams. I love it. It's such a refreshing read. They give a lot of specifics of businesses that are very successful. And you don't have to be a jerk in business. You don't have to undercut people. You don't have to speak crazy. And for me, that book has just been a really, really fantastic one. I think, again, I learned this at a conference. I'm loving the book. It just helped me be kinder, to think about things in a different way. So another phenomenal book.

0:12:34.0 KD: Okay, for the book list that's coming up for me. You guys can read along with me. You're welcome to read these on your own. I'm like dumping. It's been a while. I told you guys, I have an Audible library here, 92 title, sitting in my Audible library. Some of you might have it. And guys please geek out with me. If you have read an amazing book, hey, sharing is caring. That's why I'm on the podcast. Pop on [email protected]. Send me your favorite books because I equally wanna learn from you guys. I don't think this podcast is a one-way street. I believe it's a two-way street. And I love to hear from you. I love to engage with you guys. It's also how I get to meet you. So please email [email protected]. If you've got a good book, a book that's changed you, it can be fiction, it can be personal development, it can be business, I don't care what it is, but I'm always in the mood for a great book, a great book recommendation.

0:13:21.3 KD: So coming up on the radar is Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. Super jazzed to read this one. I've been told how to be an expert at something you have to invest 10,000 hours. And they talk about some of the most brilliant minds in history. I'm obsessed with it because I believe that if someone can be that, so can I. I might have to put a lot of time and effort into it. [chuckle] But I do believe that, I like to learn what other people do so I can mimic and marry it in my own life. So that one's up on the radar. Multipliers by Liz Wiseman and Stephen Covey. I honestly don't remember who recommended this to me. It's in my radar. So looking forward to reading that. Who, like I told you guys for hiring. That one's on there.

0:14:01.7 KD: Oh, I started this but I haven't finished it. Boundaries by John Townsend and Henry Cloud. It's more of a religious spin because I struggle with boundaries left and right. So that is another book up on my radar. And then Your Next Five Moves by Patrick Bet-David. I've been told this one is incredible. Cannot wait to read it. It's a strategy book, cannot wait. And then Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza. I just was told about Joe Dispenza, again by somebody else. I've heard it's a little bit of a controversial book, which I'm excited to read.

0:14:31.7 KD: So those are my radar books. I can't tell you anything about them. I'll probably do another podcast where I do talk about them if I really loved them. But guys, go feed your minds. Inspire yourself. Think outside the box. Listening to the podcast, shout out to you guys. I'm giving you a massive high five. Share this podcast with somebody who needs to grow. Share this podcast with somebody, and I don't care if it's this podcast, title topic or if it's another one. But guys, I think one of the greatest gifts that we can give other people is the gift of knowledge, the gift of enlightenment, the gift of thinking differently. That's why I share these books with you. This is why I read books. To share with you and to inspire you and to grow you into these greater humans. You guys, so some of my coaching clients I actually do book clubs with personally, and we work through books together. And it's really fun. It's very client specific, not all clients. Are there clients listening? It's not for everybody. For some, it's amazing.

0:15:23.8 KD: But that's part of what I love about coaching is customising it for every client, just like books. Some of those might strike your fancy, they might not. Read the books. Read something to fuel your mind every day. Promise me you'll do it. And guys, as always, this is our one shot at life. So I believe make it the best you absolutely can be. And as always, I am so appreciative of you guys listening, downloading, sharing with friends, leaving reviews. It means the world to me. So if you haven't done any of those items, leave a review, share with a friend, download the podcast, please do so. And as always, thanks so much for listening, and 'll catch you next time on The Dental A Team podcast.

[music]

0:16:00.2 KD: And that wraps it up for another episode of The Dental A Team podcast. Thank you so much for listening and we'll talk to you next time.
